Section Properties Calculator

What are section properties?

To understand how a structural element will behave, we need to know its cross-sectional properties. These properties describe the shape’s size and how its material is distributed. A key property is the second moment of area (also called moment of inertia), which indicates its resistance to bending. Other important properties include the cross-sectional area and centroid location. Engineers use these properties to ensure structures are safe, stable and perform as expected.

Using the calculator

This calculator allows users to input the geometry of their chosen section and quickly determine its key section properties. These properties, including area (A), centroid (ȳ), moment of inertia (I), and radius of gyration (r), are essential for understanding structural performance. For instance, the moment of inertia indicates a section’s resistance to bending. While calculating these properties can often be done with relatively simple formulas, this calculator simplifies the process, making structural analysis more accessible.
